Weekly Focus and Goals
This week, my primary focus was on narrative-driven level design and interactive systems for the "Lord Ii’s Mansion" arc. My goal was to move beyond basic stealth mechanics and create "Strategic Narrative Layers" where players must use environmental clues and resource management (The Meat Logic and Goshiki-mai) to progress, rather than just relying on combat.
Work Completed
I designed three core event scenarios that integrate storytelling with gameplay mechanics:
The Ninja and the Shadow (Kurokage): Designed a multi-tier interaction system for a guard dog (Kai Ken) based on resource expenditure (Meat).
The Laundry Room Covenant: Created a hidden NPC interaction (A-Fuku) to introduce the "Goshiki-mai" (Five-Color Rice) navigation system.
The Mirror’s Edge (Kagemusha): Drafted a "Detective-Stealth" scenario where players must identify the real target among decoys using cultural cues (Calligraphy and Tea Ceremony, etc).
Design Decisions and Rationale
The "Meat Logic" System: Instead of a simple "kill or avoid" choice for the guard dog, I implemented a three-tier trust system.
Rationale: This rewards players for exploration and resource hoarding, turning a lethal obstacle into a potential late-game ally, which deepens the emotional investment in the "Shinobi" experience.
Goshiki-mai (Five-Color Rice) as UI: I decided to replace traditional mini-maps or glowing waypoints with colored rice grains.
Rationale: This maintains historical immersion and forces the player to pay attention to the environment ("dust on the floor") rather than a digital overlay.
The Kagemusha Puzzle: I chose to make the "Real Lord" the more humble-looking character.
Rationale: To subvert player expectations and reinforce the theme of "deception" central to Ninja lore. It shifts the gameplay from "twitch-reflex" to "analytical observation."
Research and Precedents
Historical Research: Researched the life of Lord Ii Naosuke and the Goshiki-mai (used by historical Shinobi for coded messaging).
Feedback and User Testing
Internal Reflection: During a self-critique of the "Kagemusha" scenario, I realized that the clues might be too subtle for players unfamiliar with Japanese tea ceremonies.
Reflection and Next Steps
This week was successful in bridging the gap between "plot" and "play." The biggest challenge was ensuring the "Meat Logic" didn't feel like a simple transaction but a narrative progression.
Next Week’s Focus: I plan to begin prototyping in the Unity
