GDC 2026 Special Break
Weekly Focus and Goals

This week, the primary focus shifted from active development to industry research and networking by attending the Game Developers Conference (GDC) in San Francisco. My goal was to explore current trends in game design, observe innovative mechanics in the indie space, and gather inspiration for the next phase of my capstone project.
Work Completed

Field Research: Attended multiple sessions focusing on game mechanics and narrative design.
Playtesting & Observation: Explored the GDC Play areas to study unique interaction models and player feedback loops.
Networking: Engaged with fellow designers and developers to discuss technical challenges and creative solutions in modern game development.
Design Decisions and Rationale

I decided to pause active coding this week to fully immerse myself in the GDC environment. I believe that stepping back to see the "big picture" of the industry will help me make more informed decisions regarding my project's final polish and market positioning.

Research and Precedents

The highlights of my GDC experience were the high-level industry discussions, particularly a deep dive into level design principles with Alex, a Level Designer from Tencent.
Our conversation focused on the core philosophy that level and mechanics design must always serve a specific functional or narrative purpose. In the context of my project, this reinforced the idea that every room or obstacle shouldn't just exist for "filler" gameplay; it must be constructed to push a specific goal—whether that's teaching a new ninja skill or building tension for a narrative reveal.
Furthermore, we discussed  the core loop remains engaging while balancing the complexity of the scenarios. This has influenced me to re-evaluate my current level layout, ensuring that the environmental cues and the Five-Color Rice information-passing mechanics are tightly integrated to drive the player's objective forward
Reflection and Next Steps

It was an incredibly rewarding and energizing week! Being surrounded by the global dev community was a great reminder of why I’m building this project.
Next Steps:
Level Expansion & Iteration: My immediate priority is to design and complete additional levels.
